NigeriaSAT-1 On 27th September 2003, Nigeria launched its first experimental Earth Observation Satellite (NigeriaSat-1) into the low Orbit with 32m medium resolutions in three bands of Red, Green and Near Infrared. The success propelled the lunch of its communication satellite, NigComSat1 in 2007. The launch of NigeriSat-1 has made data available to Nigeria and the world for resource mapping, disaster management, environmental monitoring and sustainable development. Subsequently, the satellite was calibrated in-orbit for data transmission to our Ground Receiving Station in Abuja. Nigerian Engineers trained at Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL) in the UK are manning the station for satellite telemetry, tracking and control (TT&C) Global Imageries are being received from NigeriaSat-1, on daily basis, for various applications, including disaster monitoring across the globe. Highlight of NigeriaSat-1 include; Microsatellite for earth observations, Design lifespan - 5 years, Mass – 100kg, Imaging payload – 32m GSD In three bands (red, green, NIR), Swath width - 600km x 600km, Revisit period -3-5 days. Successes in the use of the imageries and also increase in knowledge and skill in interpretation of satellite data due to availability of data have increased quest for a high resolution data for more applications in urban development, security, damage assessment and detailed survey. The quest and the need to build on already existing infrastructure, while developing indigenous capacity has led to the concept of NigeriaSat-2 and NigeriaSat-X

 

NigeriaSAT-2 is a sophisticated Earth-Observation Satellite with 2.5m panchromatic, 5m multi spectral and 32m (medium resolution) multi spectral for NigeriaSat-1 data continuity. The application of NigeriaSAT-2 will ensure food security through precious agriculture, crop health monitoring as well as many applications which are vital to the development of various sectors of the economy such as petroleum, solid minerals, forestry, land administration, transport and aviation, environment, security and defense, tourism, census, health, and water resources. Nigeria, with the size of 923768sqkm, requires 2600 scenes of imageries estimated to cost about N3,546,400,000.00 (Three Billion, Five Hundred and Forty Six Million, Four Hundred thousand Naira) from a single coverage. The suitability of the data would be limited by session and time for all purposes. With the revisit period of about four days NIGERIA IS SAVED THE COST OF N64,721,800,000.00 (sixty four billion, seven hundred and twenty one million, eight hundred thousand Naira) annually for various applications. This is in addition to more detailed information, data revolution and increased security and skill development. The data is high resolution imagery with global appeal and ease of usage and is expected to be used by both the technologically advanced and the less technologically advanced people for most of their activities. 32m resolution added to the satellite would ensure continuity in application areas requiring medium resolution imageries. To enhance the quality of the imageries and also to encourage broader applications, both the high resolution and medium resolution imagers have four spectral bands of red, blue green and near infrared.

 

NigeriaSAT-X has a 22m resolution with three bands of red, blue and green this is bettter in resolution than NigeriaSat-1.
