In 1976, Nigeria declared its space ambition to members of the Economic Commission for Africa and Organization of African Unity during an inter-governmental meeting in Addis-Ababa. In 1988 the National Council of Ministers’ approved the establishment of a National Centre for Remote Sensing, to be located at Jos; with a Ground Receiving Station, at Kerang, in Mangu LGA of Plateau State(site of the defunct Aerostat Balloon Project).

The idea behind the establishment of the Centre for Geodesy and Geodynamics (CGG) was conceived as far back as 1985 when a National Technical Committee on Earthquake Phenomena (NTCEP) was inaugurated by the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology following the reported 1984 earth tremor in Ijebu-Ode and Ibadan, South-West, Nigeria.

Center for Satellite Technology Development (CSTD), Abuja

The Centre started in 2001 as a Satellite Technology project with the initiation of the Nigeria Sat-1 Earth Observation satellite project before its metamorphoses into Centre for Satellite Technology Development.

Of the five centers established with CSTD, it appeared that the main burden of pursuance of the National Space Policy and Program fell heavily on the Centre for Satellite Technology Development.

Center for Space Transport and Propulsion (CSTP), Epe

The Centre for Space Transport and Propulsion (CSTP), Epe, Lagos, was established on the 19th February, 2003, as one of the six activity Centres of National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Abuja. Nigeria. It is strategically situated along the Lagos lagoon in Epe, and in close proximity with the Lagos State University (LASU), Epe Engineering campus.

Mandate

  • To develop the engineering and scientific capability necessary to produce aerospace transport vehicles with rockets and aircrafts in mind
  • To develop and acquire the technology essential for manufacturing of the necessary components for space vehicles.
  • To develop various types of propellants for rocket engines with attention on solid, liquid, and other forms of high-energy propulsion systems.  
  • To acquire and develop the capacity to fabricate and integrate rocket systems for short, and long-range peaceful application missions.

National Center for Remote Sensing (NRCS), Jos

The desire by Nigeria to establish its own comprehensive Remote Sensing Centre dates back to 1976, when the Government first made its intentions known during an Inter-Governmental meeting held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.  Prior to this pronouncement, several studies undertaken on-behalf of the Government have indicated the need for such a centre to be centrally located.  One of such studies was carried out by the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO).
